Posidonia Oceanica
2025
This kinetic installation is part of the Symposion, an art event that characterised Gorinchem 50 years ago with geometric abstraction and nature. For this image, I was inspired by the sea grass that grows along the rocky coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and moves across the ocean floor like a play of lines.

Sea grass is also seen as the lungs of the ocean because it absorbs more CO2 than an entire rainforest. A single blade of grass does not make a difference, but the whole that moves has supernatural power. Together, it shows the breath of the sea.

This work has a rigid structure and randomness is incorporated into the programming. The sea grass, pressed from recycled plastic, is given the freedom to move on its own. It is a mechanical tribute to a silent force.
Artwork dimensions: 91x79x49cm
Recycled plastic, recycled wood, arduino and pneumatics.
