Mosselen in landschap

2025

The 36 mussels in this kinetic installation respond to the viewer as one living organism. Inspired by the mussels in the Wadden Sea, which purify all the water from the North Sea, this work emphasises their crucial role: without their movement, the ocean would suffocate. The artificial mussels move to sound and react with an apparent will of their own. This creates a playful but penetrating metaphor for public debate: without dialogue, society poisons, just like the sea without mussels.

Each sculpture is made of recycled plastic, collected and processed in collaboration with a sheltered workshop. People with disabilities transform waste into a new material that exudes beauty and sustainability. The artwork demonstrates the beauty of waste and sources of valuable resources that are there for the taking.
