A special musical experience will take place in the Grote Kerk of Dordrecht on 20 May 2023: Antifoon, a neoclassical music experience with a contemporary electronic twist. The concert is the result of collaboration between Dordrecht creators Bas van Nienes (singer-songwriter and producer) and Arjan de Wit (composer and producer), and is inspired by the discovery of an old page from an antiphonarium, a collection of 800-year-old Gregorian chants.

These chants once filled the walls of the Grote Kerk, but have been forgotten for four centuries. Discovering this historical musical fragment stimulated Van Nienes and De Wit to explore how these serene and timeless chants sounded at the time and how they can serve as inspiration for the creation of contemporary music.

The name Antiphon - which literally means ‘opposing voice’ or ‘countermelody’ - reflects their collaboration with visual artist Jelle Korevaar. Korevaar, known for his kinetic images that question meaning, provides the basis for Van Nienes and De Wit's musical pieces. Each piece of music is an interpretation of one of Korevaar's artworks, with the theme of the sculptures providing the common thread for the compositions.

During the concert, both acoustic and electronic instruments will be used to treat listeners to a musical experience that pushes the boundaries of classical and modern sounds. The result is a unique fusion of old and new sounds, adding a new dimension to the historic setting of the Grote Kerk.
