Tentakelfestival Rotterdam

Tentakelfestival Rotterdam 2017 | Art and Theatre on 7 Squares
17-09-2017
This summer, the art and theatre festival Tentakel will once again take place on seven Rotterdam squares, including Park Schinnenbaan in the Beverwaard district. The festival offers a free programme of theatre, visual arts, music and experimental workshops for young and old. Together with artists, theatre-makers and musicians, the public transforms the square into a living work of art, with everyone becoming a participant as a matter of course.
In Park Schinnenbaan, the work Angst by Jelle Korevaar will be on show. This artwork explores the dynamic between fear and enjoyment: the fear of losing what you have, preventing you from fully enjoying what you own. The work is used by neighbourhood liaison officers of the Buurtsteunpunt Beverwaard to stimulate conversations with neighbourhood residents about their own fears. Korevaar created a machine that does not want to show itself, sparking the audience's curiosity, actually creating the fear the machine was trying to avoid.
Tentacle, started in 2014, aims to bring art closer to the people. The festival provides a platform for art experiences in public spaces, where art and the city interact. Ernest van de Kwast described the festival as a fantastic opportunity for young and old to get in touch with art and stressed the value of such initiatives to counter the hardening in society.
Tentacle is an initiative of the Stadnomaden Foundation, which aims to enthuse people about visual arts and nature. They organise exhibitions, performances, lectures and educational programmes to make art and culture accessible to a wide audience.
